Boo Hoo!!!  I thought nothing would ever keep me away from what I look forward to every two years...and that's seeing all my friends from W.C...but it did.  I was at home sick and the thoughts of what I was missing made me even sicker!!!  This is the first one I have missed, but I never intend to miss another one.  I pray these reunions continue for years to come.  I do my part in spreading the word, and hope everyone else does, too.  LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

I'm really enj oying watching this year's reunion take shape, with the dinner dance in the park and the school being opened for us to visit. Having said that, i'm rather disappointed that my fellow classmates have'nt taken part in the process. Remember, we were on of the last classes out of Hookway (1978) and we'll have to carry the torch in later years...There's still time to get on board....come ou to the next meeting.....

Hello my fellow Hookway classmates. I was in the 2nd grade when Hookway closed and dreaded the fact that my brother and myself had to go to Westcott. I now leave in California and have been for the past 21 years, but my mother still leaves in our house on 79th and Yale. I would love to hear from my old classmates so hit me up. The main reason I am on this site is because my brother Michael Lumpkins RIP passed away September 12, 2008. I am currently in town and wanted all of his old friends to know. My family is trying to have his funeral this coming Friday September 19, 2008 at Taylor's funeral home on 79th street. Feel free to drop by and offer your condolences. 7941 S. Yale. My phone number is 310-864-5879. Hope to hear from anyone! I will update the information regarding the funeral arrangements as soon as everything is definite.

Hey Everybody!

It was a fun day 08/02/2008 and good to see all who came out.  As you know it was open to Calumet alumni and a brunch was on the agenda on Sunday afternoon.  I went to the brunch and to my surprise Dwight Kendall (81st Harvard) was there and who else popped up by chance and no connection with the reunion---Yolanda Strong (81st LaSalle).  I didn't get a chance to give Yolanda details of this site but she still looks the same.

Each time that I come on this website I find something great. Speaking of great, I cannot explain how much fun I had at the picnic on August 4th 2007. My anticipation was high before the reunion, but it went to another level once I got to the park. Man, I saw classmates that I haven't seen since we graduated in 1971(Judy Brown). Truly an honor. Also, thanks to my sisters Celeste and Charmagne for putting up with me for 5 hours. Finally, God blessed me on that Saturday. I was able have non stop conversations with outstanding people, remember past events, and actually recature my youth for a few hours with the most beautiful human beings on this planet. Thanks for allowing me back into your lives and God's blessings to all of you. Until next summer. James Lawson

I really enjoyed myself. The last 2 years have been so much fun--developing, planning and directing the reunions. I worked with some outstanding people--some I knew at Hookway--some I just met. Many friendships were made. The reunion, though, is bigger than what we actually see (rekindling relationships and having a big party for ourselves). It's a bigger plan. Stay Tuned!!!

I just also wanted to add that the pictures on the fence is what REALLY made the reunion. It was a trip to see my Kindergarten picture looking just like my sister Stooky's identical twin grandaughters, Kayla and Kyla! So, KUDOS to Janice Webb for her hard work in putting it together. And if you did not see your picture up there, its because you did not bring it to her so she could photocopy it and put it up there, so next time if you want to be on the board......................

Hookway and West Chatham were the "good old days." Remember Miss O'Neil seemed to really get excited when she made us learn "square dances" for the Day Camp Show. Little black kids square dancing-- every year. Mrs. Jefferson the Hookway librarian yanked my ear and made me stand in the hall because I asked her why we had to learn the Dewey Decimal System. "Catch a girl, kiss a girl." Why did we wait anxiously for the "mosquito man" to come so we could play in the white smoke. My daddy standing on 1st base with his khakis pulled up to his chest, high-top sneakers & no socks -- hollering at Haywood, Ecchie Blue and the rest of the Dodgers, "You just gave the game away." The Dodgers rarely lost. The Little League All Stars going to Thillens to play and hoping there was room in the car for me & Tiny.

What's Up West Chatham and Hookway Classmates!!! I am truly upset that I have missed the reunions. Thanks to my brother, Bobby he brought my kids home one summer (I live in Texas now) and my kids have attended a reunion before, but not their mom! Now that my youngest daughter attends college in Chicago, my mom living in Lansing, IL, many family and friends still living in Chicago, well, I hope to make this year's reunion. In the past, I either barely missed the dates traveling before or after the event. It would be great to see many of you again. It is truly awesome to see what you all have done making this an annual event! All the memories, the people, teachers, this website, etc. is amazing. When I mention to people that my old elementary school/neighborhood has these reunions, it is hard for them to believe it! I still know that no matter where I live. . . West Chatham still remains where my heart is! This is where my heart was filled, broken, mended, repaired, fixed, nourished and grown, and that was GOOD! Until we meet again! Karen

Truly Blessed is what are Community was and still is today. I loved growing up with everybody especially my little league teams, after school days with friends in the playground at Hookway. You know with the bigger kids hanging out with their cars parked on the lot playing basketball, strikeout and softball. The parades to open the summer activities in the park. I'm especially thankful to the parents and older kids who devoted time to all those activities. Let's keep the memories of West Chatham alive as well as those who have gone on to Glory. The Reunion was a lot of fun seeing my neighbors again. I Love All of You. GOD Bless Us All!

I left the park after the reunion with a big smile on my face. It remained there evenwhen I spotted the ticket on my windshield! Thanks for the hugs they will carry me 'till next time. Most of my friends are green with envy when they hear about my being able to truly "go home" and see my West Chatam peeps. I had the privilege of seeing both my son(17) and daughter(14) graduate on the same stage I did in 1973. I barely remember the ceremonies because I spent my time staring at the WPA paintings still on the auditorium walls. Remember those gigantic pilgrims and indians looking down on us. My mother (Bunny Dallas - teacher's aide) was able to see my son graduate and felt the same awe. Unfortunately, she passed in Nov. 2004 and was not at my daughter's graduation. I know she would have loved seeing some of the kids she chased around the playground and scolded during recess. By the way, the day camp counselor's name was Mrs. O'Neil and she'd go ballistic when you couldn't decide if you wanted chocolate or white milk while it was being passed out at the back door of the field house. Go "Rookies" & "Old Timers". Piggy 2!

The reunion was really fun--seeing all my fellow Hookway School classmates. I just had to step back and look at what a success the picnic turned out to be and to really thank God for everything. God brought the right people to help plan the reunion (Everyone got along!!), God allowed me to interact with people from Hookway that I didn't know at school. God stopped the rain from coming down on us on a day where they predicted rain for the 19th a week in advance. Where there was not incidents at the reunion. THANKS GOD!!! (fOR EVERYTHING!!!!)

God is so Good. I was unable to attend most of the reunion, had a commitment I couldn't miss. I was able to attend a couple of planning meetings and help set-up reunion day morning, so I did get a chance to see some of my fellow West Chathamites. I did see some fantastic pictures, Thank You Bunny & Gail. The more pictures I saw, the sorrier I was for not being able to give and get my hugs. I brag all the time about how wonderful it was to grow up in a neighborhood like no other. Thank You God for placing us in the sacred garden of West Chatham. Looking forward to attending the next one!

Hello to all who graduated from Hookway in 1969! This is such a treat. Thanks to Laurene Hynson for informing me of this site. I hope all is well with my former classmates. Wow, is it 37 years? My husband of 26 years - Sherman, my 16 year old son - Christopher and I live in Gurnee so we're still in the "area". So good to read your comments and see the photos. Time has been very kind to all of you. Our former school looks beautiful. I was married in Commonwealth Church and who knows how many hours spent playing in the park. West Chatam still has it's charm. Best wished to everyone, Roneida

Growing up in West Chatham set the tone for my life. Good nurturing from my parents and neighbors and seeing the wonderful examples our folks set, prepared me for parenthood. I was deeply saddened to read the names of fellow classmates we’ve lost over the years, but will be happy to see those of us still in the race. The only other thing I have to say is..."Piggy 1!!!"

It was a tree right at the end of the block on 81st and Harvard and when I was a little person we made it out of our baseball diamond, we played softball, we climbed that tree. , we talked under that tree. we had first kisses under that tree. The ice skating in the winter. remember the little field house, back in the day. what was that lady's name? the one that ran the park then and the day camp?school, the walk to Hookway in the winter. the fun we had! laughter. the nice neighbors, friendly caring neighbors! we enjoyed it! but our parents wanted more space, bigger house, so we moved. We never forgot West Chatam. It was a good and comforting experience in my childhood.
